Raiders free agents quandary
By Steve Corkran
Thursday, February 16th, 2012 at 12:38 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders have a penchant for re-signing a majority of their prospective free agents. Doing so this season won’t be nearly as easy, given they have 22 such players, they are $11 million over the salary cap and there is a burning need to sign a few players in free agency.
Here is a breakdown of how new coach Dennis Allen and first-year general manager Reggie McKenzie figure to approach the daunting task of what to do with the long list:
Easy calls — Two of those names can be crossed off the list simply by offering restricted free agents Marcel Reece and Desmond Bryant one-year tenders. Both players are young, productive and won’t cost much.
The Raiders can let walk quarterbacks Jason Campbell and Kyle Boller, defensive end Trevor Scott, safety Jerome Boyd, cornerback Lito Sheppard, linebackers Ricky Brown, Quentin Groves and Darryl Blackstock and wide receivers T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Chaz Schilens.
They already have a starting quarterback in Carson Palmer and a No. 3 in Terrelle Pryor. Signing someone such as David Garrard would take care of the primary backup spot.
There is no burning need to bring back for any of the eight other veterans who are eligible to become free agents March 13.
Tough calls — Running back Michael Bush wants to be a starting running back. He realizes that isn’t apt to happen in Oakland as long as Darren McFadden is on the roster.
Therefore, Bush likely won’t be interested in a long-term contract. Given that, the Raiders have to decide whether they want to use the franchise tag on Bush, to the tune of $7.7 million or so for 2012.
McKenzie has a history of working for a team that finds unheralded running backs and develops them into productive players. He also has McFadden and Taiwan Jones on the roster.
That makes it unlikely that Bush will be franchise-tagged. If so, the only other player who might get that designation is strong safety Tyvon Branch.
It’s more likely that the Raiders will try to work out a long-term contract with Branch so that they can avoid committing a ton of money to Branch for 2012, when they need to use some of that money on other players.
Center Samson Satele was re-signed last year and started all season. It’s possible that the Raiders will switch second-year player Stefen Wisniewski from left guard to center and try someone else at guard. If not, look for Satele to be re-signed.
Toss-ups — Offensive linemen Stephon Heyer and Khalif Barnes, defensive end Jarvis Moss, safety Matt Giordano and running back Rock Cartwright played key roles last season.
Re-signing any of those players likely will depend upon their willingness to return at a modest price and whether they receive better offers elsewhere.
Once Allen and McKenzie sort out this mess, then they can turn their attention toward free agents from other teams.
As of now, the Raiders are in the market for a cornerback, wide receiver, linebacker and defensive lineman. Freeing up enough cap space will be key to placing the Raiders in a position to go after some of the top-tier players expected to hit the open market next month.
That process is underway right now. The Raiders can reach cap compliance by the March 13 deadline by cutting a few more players and/or restructuring wieghty contracts of players such as Palmer, linebacker Kamerion Wimbley, cornerback Chris Johnson, defensive tackles John Henderson and Tommy Kelly and free safety Michael Huff.
Here is the entire list of Oakland’s prospective free agents:

Report: Raiders more than $25 million over projected cap figure
http://www.ibabuzz.com/oaklandraiders/2012/02/28/r eport-raiders-more-than-25-million-over-projected- cap-figure/
You know that's a bad thing right?
New GM'S Math skills to be put to the test.
If the NFL can cut you at any given momemt, then why would someone restructure their contract?
Oh, My poor slow witted Young Padawan. You make a lousy Troll.
I'm surprised you know how to turn on a computer. I bet you still put your shoes on before your pants in the morning, that's how slow you come off as, Young Padawan.
Again your lack of football knowledge amazes. Every year Da RAIDERS are over cap & every Year they get under cap before the deadline.
It's a running joke. How much are they over this year? This year I believe is the highest ever. But not to worry Da Raiders will be under just in time. Like always....
It's not some grand achievement, but indicative of the disaster of a franchise being run out there.
They have to get under the cap or they'll be penalized.
Also, the fact that you think I come off as stupid or ignorant is high fucking comedy.
But you're the guy who thinks the Carson Palmer deal was a good one. His cap hit is 12.5 million this season.
lol Poor Jimmy...
I know your to dim to understand. I'll try to explain it in the SIMPLEST way I can for you.
Da Raiders Management did what They had to, to keep the WHOLE Season from derailing when Campbell went down. They made a Choice to bring in a QB that was actually an upgrade over Campbell. GOD knows Kyle Boller wasn't going to lead us to any wins. Carson sadly never got to play with RUN-DMC last season.....
Do I think they paid too much, yes.
But unlike the Bungles they did something to make the team better and give them a chance to keep winning last season.
I know you where still in diapers so you've never even seen the Bungles make a S.B.
This is what you get for each one your team wins a Super Bowl. As you can see My Team Has WON 3! Not the most but better than average in the NFL!
>Da Raiders Management did what They had to, to keep the WHOLE Season from derailing when Campbell went down. They made a Choice to bring in a QB that was actually an upgrade over Campbell. GOD knows Kyle Boller wasn't going to lead us to any wins. Carson sadly never got to play with RUN-DMC last season.....
and that successful strategy led to them all getting fired, some derailment strategy there, 2 Dank Logic at its best, but Dan's on board rain or shine
you know what's a great way to get under the cap under the new CBA, and replenish some of those players you need to cut for Cap purposes?
Good luck with that 5th round pick.
Um, I believe Jimbo is a Giants fan. In which case I'm pretty sure he knows what those trophies look like - especially since the Giants have MORE of them than the Raiders have and the Raiders have not won one in almost 20 years.
(Shhhhh Six. He thinks I'm a bengals fan because I think Carson Palmer is horrible and that trade was abysmal for Oakland when in fact I think Carson Palmer is horrible and that trade was abysmal for Oakland because Carson Palmer is horrible and that trade was abysmal for Oakland )
Sorry, dude, but he pretty much digs his own holes. You really don't have to help him.
Sage Advice my friend.
>>>and that successful strategy led to them all getting fired<<<
As reported Mark Davis made the Final Decision on that trade. Yes started by Hue Jackson, Finalized by Mark Davis! Mark's still there... lol
Sadly Run-DMC can't stay health and didn't make it back our the AFC WEST was ours.
4-2 with RUN-DMC
4-6 without all you need to know, Young Padawan.
So now you're claiming the Giants! lol Stick to you're club, I bet your a bash Eli guy until this ring.....
You're not worth me paying attention to who you root for. Though I believe you lied to me then because I seem to remember you saying you where a Bungles fan in the old thread. If you worth any more of my time than I have wasted responding to you. I go look but you're not, sorry little one.
What's that smell, I think somebody needs to change Jimmy's diaper.
>>>Though I believe you lied to me then because I seem to remember you saying you where a Bungles fan in the old thread.
Nope. That was all your assumption.
Again stick to your own club.
Because "I think Carson Palmer is horrible" shows just how DIM you're. You shouldn't "THINK" it make you look like the young little dim fool you're. You should try to hide that.
I understand that you have insecurity issues pretaining to football knowledge. Plus a big EGO that won't let you admit you're DIM & WRONG. Poor Young Padawan, Someday you'll MAN-UP and be MAN enough to ADMIT you're WRONG.
Here let me try to help you. Repeat after me.....
CARSON PALMER is a BETTER QB than Jason Campbell.
I understand you can't speak to anything else, because you're so DIM.
So you choice to ignore
about the trade
"Do I think they paid too much, yes."
And unless you're a closet Raiders Fan WTF do you care how much they gave in the trade? The Bungles are not in the NFC East, Just encase you didn't know.
Now move along, let the Adults Chat.
You REALLY are an idiot 2dunce.
2011 Palmer QB Rating 80.5
2011 Campbell QB Rating 84.2
Palmer TD's 13
Palmer Int's 16
Campbell TD's 6
Campbell Int's 4
Palmer completion % 60.7
Campbell completion % 60.6
its just so plain to see, why is Dan the only one that gets it?
the hole just keeps on getting deeper....
Those stats MEAN NOTHING!
Palmer was without Run-DMC all 10 games he played in. Campbell had Run-DMC in all 6 of his.
I Think everyone in the FOLDER would have to say Having RUN-DMC is a GAME CHANGER. If they have a brain in their head.
Also Palmer went games without D.Moore, K.Boss, M.Reese, J.Ford & L.Murphy in his 10 games.
That's a lot of weapons missing for him to throw to. None bigger than Run-DMC slipping out of the back field....
So Throw those Stats around all you want. They prove nothing to anyone who watched both QB's play 3 games each last year.
If you had watched 6 Raiders Games wins to wins, loses to loses. There is NO DOUBT, CARSON is BETTER than CAMPBELL. PERIOD
Carson came in and played week 1 with the team not knowing the offense or his WR's.THROW INTO THE FIRE!!! UNHEARD OF EVER IN THE NFL! I throw those 3 INT's out in my book. Shit the man just got off a coach.
I Know your not man enough to admit that just like Jimmy!
Raiders Offensive Rankings 2011
Points scored 22.4 (16th in league)
Yards a Game 379.5 (9th in league)
Passing yard a Game 247.6 (11th in league)
Rushing yards a Game 131.9 (7th in league)
2012 completely starting over..... with Greg Crapp!
I can tell how much of a Giants Fan Jimmy is 2 whole posts in last years Giants Thread! Yea he's a diehard. Spends more time in Raiders Threads. lol
I'd bet I rooted harder for them in the Playoff than Jimmy did.
Raiders Tag Branch
"Going the franchise-tag route guarantees Branch approximately $6.2 million for 2012 if he signs the one-year tender."
Leaves M.Bush open to Free Agency. Been fun Bush, you will be missed since RUN-DMC is a CHINA DOLL!
Seabass in trouble again, only took 10 years from last time.

Raiders coach Allen with Saints during ‘bounty’ scandal
http://www.ibabuzz.com/oaklandraiders/2012/03/02/r aiders-coach-allen-with-saints-during-bounty-scand al/
Funny you'd think Da RAIDERS would be the ones guilt of this. You know with their Bad Boy Image from way back in the 60's-80's.
Can't count the late 90's we had a preach on the team Napoleon Kaufman!!!!!!!
From 2 picks to 5!
I'll take it! Thank You NFL!
