You can understand that he's a little disappointed not being part of Furthur. I'm sure Mickey is also. I'm still hoping that eventually Furthur would continue with three drummers... Attacking John K isn't really fair, as anyone who has gone to some Furthur shows knows, John is terrific. Sometimes in anger we say things we shouldn't.
With that said both Mickey (rhythm devils) and Billy (7 Walkers and rhythm devils) are putting out some really fine music.
7 Walkers (Billy, Papa Mali and George Porter Jr.) has a great new album with Robert Hunter writing the lyrics and they are touring now including the City Winery on Sunday, December 19 on Varick Street in Manhattan.
Be there!

from what i understand, mickey and billy were given an option to play with furthur and they declined..they thought it would be mundane and selling out..mickey has so much other shit going on--and so does billy so i do not know why he says the things he does about furthur. maybe he is regretting his decision to not partake in something that has blossomed so beautifully...im sure there was a lot of skepticism to where and what furthur would go and become. i even saw billy recently with rhythm devils and they basically only played grateful dead--i aint complaining it was awesome 400 person nook in seneca niagara casino niagara falls--met mickey at the elevators of the hotel and and actually rode down with sikiru their talking drum player on the way to t he show

I don't claim to know with certainty, but I'd be surprised if Billy and Mickey "were given an option to play with Furthur". Both Phil and Bobby have made it clear they had musical issues with their former bandmates, and anyone who's heard Furthur, even when Jay Lane was onboard as a percussionist, ought to have noted how much "cleaner" and more streamlined the drums sound. I simply don't think either Phil or Bobby really wanted double drumming.

Billy & mickey only play at one speed now.....SLOW. Listen to the Dead 09 (if you can) and compare it to Furthur w/Russo. NO CONTEST

I disagree with that. Ive played drums in alot of bands over the past 25 years and the lead singer of the tune usually is the one to count the song out and set the tempo. The slow tempos in 09 could have also been Bob Phil, or Warrens fault. Ive heard Billy K playing some really up tempos on the GD covers hes dong in 7 walkers.

I vote Joe Russo!! He is 2 drummers, even the slow tunes move now.

I still say no Rhythm Devils then bring in Molo !! Also Rob Barraco would be better on keys and the Band would benefit from his superior Vocal Skills

One drummer vs. two drummers—note the way the 1972-74 jazz-informed Dead and their jams could turn corners and shift gears. Much more difficult w/two drummers.

molo bob phil jimmy rob that would be the shit. but aint gonna happen. so jk for jimmy would be nice at least, russo is nuts but hes not going off as i expected, probably because of lack of cohesion, or called down tempos. i think bob or somebody is dragging the tempi down on some furthur stuff and jk does play a little behind the beat, little too loose without pushing the beat if that makes sense? doesnt lead enough as in LSD bend ur mind, peaking, balls to the wall shit. but hey im a herring fan here so fwiw, and i havent heard the recent msg run or that 11-12 show which looked like a heater. btw just bsing around, i will make it to furthur health willlin this spring, east coast tour, in my backyard :-)! just a little constructive critism, not that they're listnin'.

basically im w/ sluggo in desire for that 72-74 jazz influenced jamminess that was so great, not that other eras arent fucking amazing too, greatest band on earth. and its just that the Q round abouts 01-02 was damn close in energy and lysergic-abledness. but hey- its all good.

russo is bk from 1972-74 right now...no other guitar player could match JK and no other KB could match JC except maybe for Kyle hollingsworth of SCI - dont need Rob to sing with sunshine and jeff back there and for you jimmy (yawn) herring fans- how would furthur sound without JK singing?

yawning doesn't make your opinion any more credible than mine, it is art it is music, it is therefore subjective and debatable. but thanks for the condescension in the form of a yawn when giving your opinion. one thing that is fact is that herring would play circles around jk in terms of musical chops (technical facility, harmonic/scalar language etc). the only think jk has him on is imitating jerry garcia licks and of course singing. i agree kyle might match jc, but i think rob is as good as well imo again of course. and russo is not quite bk from 72-74, imo that is a stretch, partially bc of the group russo is playing with is not as telepathic and responsive as the gd were at that time. but hey its all good dude. purely opinions, opinions.

I like Furthur, seems kinda strange that Billy is down on Furthur given the fact that he tours with 7 Walkers and BK3 and plays a ton of DEAD stuff. Not sure his versions are any more of a sell out than Furthur. I think it is easy to take his comments out of context.

>>>"Billy & mickey only play at one speed now.....SLOW. Listen to the Dead 09 (if you can) and compare it to Furthur w/Russo. NO CONTEST<<< .....I totally agree that there is "NO CONTEST" between The Dead 09 and Furthur! Seen both bands, compared recordings of each band side by side, and IMO, Furthur is far better. I cant beleive how slow the tempo was with The Dead 09, but I dont blame that on just Mickey and Billy, it was a group effort
