Picked up two tickets today. I had to do it as Phil's birthday usually takes place in San Francisco; East Coast celebrations are rare!

I hope we all sing Happy Birthday..

Happy Birthday Phil. It's wonderful to see you on that stage doing what you do so well and enjoying yourself searching for the sound, night after night.
May you have many more, and continue to do what you love, because we love it too!

Yes, they will do The Medley Tonite to open the second set. The Medley as recorded was only 17 minutes so there will be plenty of time to Jam Furthur!! Don't think Sir Paul will show. Wonder if Ringo or Paul know that they are doing this??

Happy B-day Phil, My best to you and your family and for your son's musical careers. And yes, I am an organ donor!!

Wish I could be there tonite folks. They have NEVER done this before.

That was alot of fun. The first set wasn't my choice of a set list and Corrina has never been my favorite, but they played it grate and Jeff took the band out there at one point. The Crazy Fingers>So Many Roads was fine by me and reminded me of the 76 Crazy Fingers>Comes A Time I heard at fhe Tower a loooooong time ago. The start of set two was rockin' and guy next to me, for some reason went bonkers at the start of China Cat. Niether he nor I knew what was coming. You kinda knew New Potato was starting something but even tho The Medeley was predicted, it was something. I need to hear it again to remember who sang what but John did shine and sang Money, and Golden Slumber very well. Bobby sang Bathroom window. The band pulled it off. The rest was kind of a blur to me, but I think this band nailed Truckin and they do not always nail that song. We all thought the bomb at the end of St. was the start of Dew, but instead we got the first St. Stephen>Her Majestey ever, I think.

I'll use the review thread thru Sunday to post setists, unless TaperRob is there and faster.

Still havin' a blast after all these years.

Wow... Just got home.. Philnomenal night... The Abbey Road medley was played spectacularly...with vocal spread and shared throughot.
Scarlet>China>Ramble on Rose was a highlight..
Also the crescendo jam on Trucking was even better than its usual greatness... Show ended earlier (11:37) ... I wanted more...but alas it wasn't to be... Still a great night and a great show from a great band.. Can't wait for Radio City...

4:30... Let's see if any tickets are available online for a reasonable price. Got one for Friday for $115, including all the service charges. No luck. Philzone posts...no luck. E-mails and calls and Craigs List... Nada.. 5:30...the $150 & $175 tickets are all gone and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay $250. But it's only a 45 minute train ride and it is Phil's Birthday and the 2nd side of Abbey Road is due. Fuck it. I'm going. Caught the 6:30 train. Not one to sit on my laurels when there’s important work to be done, there I am walking up and down the train in my business attire, which included a Jerry Garcia tie, strictly by coincidence I swear, asking confused hippies if they had an extra. No Luck. Got to the show by 7:40. Stuck up my finger and offered the usual, "sex for your extra" and a nice civilian looking guy with gray hair unzipped his jacket and pulled out three pieces of 8 ½ X 11 paper and asked if I needed one. $60 and I was in.

It was like fate. I guess I was just meant to be there tonight. What a great show it was for me. Really hit the spot.

Dancin' in the Streets> One of my faves. I saw the last GD version and always seem to miss it.
Loose Lucy>
I Need a Miracle>
Tennessee Jed
Corrina>
Crazy Fingers>
So Many Roads
Mason's Children

I can't really do the song by song justice, but I thought the first set was pretty tight. Very interesting song choices. My first Corrina in a very long time was enjoyable. I loved the Crazy Fingers. I think John missed a line in Tennesee Jed and he & Bobby got a giggle out of that. I thought the Mason's raged.

But where the heck are all the Phil tunes?

2nd Set
I started to sing Happy Birthday at the start of the 2nd set. Seemed like the right thing to do at the time. But you know, it's kind of over in a second and not everybody had a chance to join in.

Golden Road…but but but this is where the Abbey road is supposed to be, right? Anyway, this is hot so I'll just dance and enjoy it.
...Scarlet Begonias> Yippee. A fine version with the formal Scarlet ending into...
China Cat> very nice surprise. Good jam into...what?!?
Ramble On Rose… It was pretty darn hot I thought. Unexpected out of that jam but seemed to rise to the occasion.
New Potato Caboose> OK, here's some Phil. Thought it was short, maybe some missed queues but then it transitioned into the Abbey Road material and all was right with the world.

So special. Such a nice birthday gift for Phil, from Phil, whatever, it all rolls in to one. They played everything really great. However, John seemed to pass the baton to Jeff for a keyboard solo in place of doing the famous famous guitar solos in The End, where each of the Beatle guitarists took a turn to make one final statement in the last song they recorded together. I thought that would have been a highlight. Don't know why he didn't play it. I'm sure he would have done it justice just like Russo did the famous Ringo drum solo justice. Anyway, the whole segment was truly wonderful.

Never having heard any version other than the original just seemed to highlight how fun and gorgeous and how beautifully constructed those songs are. It's hard to describe. Abbey Road is like Dark Side of The Moon of Led Zeppelin II. It's just part of your musical DNA. If you never heard them again you still know every lick by heart. Yet hearing it performed live by the band just made me think, "Oh my God, I never knew it could be so beautiful," which is kind of a surprising reaction to something you think you knew so well.

you never give me your money>
sun king>
mean mr. mustard (Phil)>
p. Pam>
she came in through the bathroom window
...golden slumbers>
carry that weight>
the end
Crowd roars
Built to Last> Interesting choice. Lovely tune. I guess they/Phil were trying to say something by putting it here. Well played and a nice way to continue the dreamy floating. Not much of a transition into Truckin.' It kind of petered out and Truckin' started almost from a standstill, if I remember correctly.

I thought they did a fine job of patiently building the peaks. It was a pretty solid version. Someone needs to put up a video of John's expression when Bobby sang his "fuckin' shame" bastardization of the "ain't it a shame" lyrics. He stuck out his tongue and rolled his eyes as if to say, "Dude, I don't have anything to do with this and I'm totally embarrassed to be up here playing while this self-indulgent lunatic fucks with these great rock and roll lyrics." You could say I'm just projecting but I'm not. That's why I hope a video pops up. You'll see. His expression says exactly what I said it says. Very funny face.

OK, everyone tried to show Phil their love during the donor rap, as you might expect. And the guitarists kind of did a muddled intro to Happy Birthday. Anyway...

St. Stephen! GREAT CHOICE. Well played. Even at the end of a long show I danced pretty hard. Then I thought for sure the answer to the answer man would be Fire On The Mountain. Oh well.

And I guess Phil just didn't feel like doing a lot of singing on his Birthday. It's his prerogative. But I was thinking how nice a Keep On Growing would have been coming from him on this momentous occasion. Oh well. Wait until next year;-)

Nice review WeWant Phil.
Dancin'was really nice and happening to start the show. I did a flip video of it and will post it later today. Lucy was rocking and the crowd was very into it, almost too into it lol.
They over sold the place big time and there was barely enough room for all of us. They set up a bar to the right of the sb which was totally a mistake.
You barely had room to dance.

Miracle was a nice nod to the tour heads who by my count all got in...nice :-)
Tennessee Jed was rock solid, if not somewhat understated.
When they started Corrina I could not even recognize it lol
man was this a wrong choice IMHO. The temp was way to slow and although as mentioned Jeff did some great work it was a buzz kill for the majority.

I was thinking at this time"Is this really Bobbý's gift to Phil?!?"

Then the meat of the set began. The Crazy Fingers was perfect and Phil was amazing on it...Whew!!!!
Then into So Many Roads? LOVED it and this one was powerful. The ending was not to over done,John could have done a couple more rounds but I was very happy with it :-)
Then Mason'Children OMG. Clearly the best part of the show so far and I mean they RAGED on it. Phil clearly was steering the bus now.

Actually I thought this was for the Zone, I mea considering what went down the last couple of days here it made sense.

No happy birthday sining yet :-((( I ws like come on New York.
Set II and still no "Happy Birthday" yet.
Golden Road was rocking and I know Phil loves playing this but it was not what I expected to launch us off.

Now the Scarlet...Bob we got our first repeat from Tuesday :-O was HUGE and the band soared on it big time and another intense jam out of it and now we were there.
China Cat was alot of fun, I think it was Bob who spaced out the second verse, or was it John? Either way they recovered quickly John sang it and we were off.
A nice jam out of it, teasing at Rider or maybe GDTRFB and then Ramble on Rose.
This worked very well but but this time many peps were sloppy drunk and it showed big time lol

Then Phil took over with a majestic and heartfelt New Potato Caboose.. Bobby had his fun in set one and you knew something special was gonna happen.

Simply the transition into You Never Give Me Money was pure bliss. I mean when Phil played those first few notes....
OMG even the hardcores were grinning ear to ear.
Baby we had the goods now and man it only would get better.
When they went into Sun King it was like we were floating and man when Jeff and Sunshine sang the back up harmonies...the placed roared and when they sang the Italian verses us hard cores really went nuts they got a very well deserved shot out.
Zoner take note this was clearly for you.

Phil was perfect on Mean Mr Mustard.. this one was for the ZONE baby.... such a dirty old man.
Polythene Pam was had one slight vocal miscue by Bob I believe but still was great..
Then we were sent to heaven I mean you have to listen and to hear how well they did with the ending part of this masterpiece.
It was stunning,
I mean Joe even nailed Ringo's famous drum solo. ;)
The message "Love You, Love You, Love You"
Perfect and Zone definitely take note please.
The End was beautiful and again peeps take note :-)

Wow they did the whole medley?
Amazing.
We freakin' danced our asses off :-O

Built to Last was clearly Phil's choice, Zone take note, and worked but was a odd choice for me after that amazing work moments before.

They got off to a rough start on Truckin'.
I am thinking WTF!?! You guys just played Abbey Road perfectly LMAO
but they got it together and they rocked it out big time and that SECOND peak lead by Phil was perfect.

Great love and acknowledgement for Phil and then thanks to Bobby we finally sang Phil Happy Birthday he was grinning ear to ear.

Then another massive curve ball St. Stephen which was really good but the end jam was just plain sick and then a moment of OMG!!! What is it gonna be....
Her Majesty WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I even got to enjoy a couple cupcakes too.
Happy Trails

Start to finish great show!... even had a perfect smoke/beer break corrina thrown in the first set.

Abbey Road was a monster! ... i love beatle covers in the city and this night topped them all. Including the tomorrow never knows/ walrus/ strawberry fields break outs at the beacon (-)10 years ago. Last night was flawlessly played, not rushed and so so NEW YORK. Still glowing this morning over it.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PHIL! ...long may you run my friend.

In addition to these beautiful reviews posted, I would like to add that this was the most pleasant crowd I have had the pleasure of being a part of in memory.

I can't remember the last show where there wasn't at least a momentary distraction caused by someone's loud talking, or rough shoving through or the like. And as you know, sometimes drunken boorish behavior can be unpleasant (if you're not the drunk boor).

It occurred to me way near the end of the show when someone behind me started talking and their friend immediately shushed them and I realized that the focus on the music hadn't been broken involuntarily at all, all night.

This was a special show and people there felt that they really had to be there. It truly felt like we were surrounded by sisters, brothers & friends. Good for all of us.

And Thank You Phil.

I was so happy to be in the room last night when they did the second half of Abbey Road. I used to imagine what it would sound like if the GD did Golden Slumbers>carry That Weight>The End and last night I got to sort of find out. I thought it was pretty much flawless. Bob did the lion's share of the work and he pulled it off.

I enjoyed the rest of the show as well. The first set flowed better than it looked on paper, they barely stopped, maybe once during the set. The song selection was not my favorite except for Crazy Fingers and Dancing and those were probably the least well played. Oh well. Still enjoyed it.

The other stuff surrounding "The Medley" was really well done. Wasn't thrilled with the song selection or placement but I think they were making a statement with the last two songs so why not.

The encore was incredible.

Really fun, special show. They did the Beatles proud I thought.

Built To Last was placed perfectly after we got lovingly dragged down Abbey Road. What could top that? Just about nothing. So let the decompression begin......

"...im still going to keep going but after last night there really is no point in going ..."

My thoughts exactly after 12/31/78 and that was a few hundred shows ago. I know what you're saying , but there's always a point to keep on going. It's fresh every night. That's the point.

Been seeing shows for 25 yrs. -- this one ranks among the best.

The Abbey Rd. medley was a magic moment with several instances of goosebumps...flawlessly executed and expertly played w/ so much heart and soul. I really could not have been any more impressed. Faithful renditions, precise transitions, and inspired playing. I have to point out that the vocal distribution was brilliant.

JK took "You Never Give Me Your $", but Bobby took the "out of college" and "that magic" parts before JK took it back for "one sweet dream" and it was all SO great! Obviously, they could never have done this w/o Jeff P. & Sunshine -- they were sublime throughout.

Bob took some of "Sun King," but it was mostly ensemble...watching Chimenti's face light up as he listened to his bandmates sing the Italian section perfectly was a real delight. In fact, the band members were so visibly excited to tear through this material and were clearly enamored of one another's chops.

Phil sang "Mean Mr. Mustard." I thought Octopus's Garden was perfect for him the other night, but this was even better (big smiles from him as he sang "such a mean old man!; such a dirty old man").

The "Polythene Pam" was a balls-to-the-walls rock and roller led by Mr. Weir. Hands up in the air everywhere, people were screaming with joy, lights flashing -- total liftoff. The energy ebb and flow from song to song was incredible and gave you even more appreciation for this medley and the dynamics btw/ the songs.

Bob kicked ass on "She Came In Through the Bathroom Window" and even hit a falsetto as needed. I have to say that Bobby really shined in the vox dep't during the medley.

JK's "Golden Slumber" was delicate and crystalline -- really soulful with some great growling. JK then carried "Carry That Weight" (with group chorus vox) and "The End" which featured a crushing Russo fill section, then a rollicking JC solo and a great call and response/twin lead bit btw. JC and JK.

Hearing this suite of music was so moving, not to mention a full on rave-up at times (Polythene; Bathroom; The End..."love you, love you, love you!"). Throughout it all, you really felt the energy of what The Beatles were all about. Being inside that Abbey Road bubble was the ultimate escapism...and a real barn burner when necessary -- at those moments, I felt like "This is my Cavern show; my Shea Stadium." Pure bliss and an authentic slice of Dead alchemy.

Other highlights included an absolutely tremendous Tenn Jed (JK tore this up BIG TIME), a great Corrina jam, and a rollicking Mason's. The song selection in the 2nd set was top-notch. Huge playing on every number right out of the gate w/ Golden Rd., but esp. Scarlet and the incredible jam and transition into China Cat. Built To Last had some hiccups, but made a nice statement for Phil's 71st and this wonderful cannon of music. Truckin' was the exclamation point, and the friggin' monstrous St. Stephen was the cherry on the cake. I don't know what that makes "Her Majesty," but it was delectable.

Thank you Furthur, thank you Phil

"One sweet dream came true today, yes it did."

Since everybody else covered the Beatles material, I'll jump on some of the other stuff.

Dancing In The Streets was a great way to start a night like this, in a city like this. Yes, the Grateful Dead have played better versions in the past but who really cares.

Scarlet Begonias was great, too. Furthur just keeps getting better and better with this classic.

Ramble On Rose was probably one of the highlights for me personally because they played it so well and because it brought back some good memories from the other times I heard them play it in the past.

China Cat was obviously great to hear, especially mixed into a setlist like this.

Jill was grooving all night on the side of the stage, right near John's amp. She was having as much fun as anybody in the crowd.

Everybody at this show seemed to have decades worth of stories from all the classic Grateful Dead shows they've been to in the past. Its easy to be faithful when the music sounds this great.
Also, the father/son combos were nice to see just because its so rare when two different generations listen to the same band.

Overall, this was a great show and I am so grateful for being able to attend.

One more time, Happy B-Day Phil and THANK YOU!

Some more random comments:

1. Yes, if it's not already obvious...one for the ages. Everybody was just beaming during the Abbey Road. I had some consternation about whether to just close my eyes and throw myself into it or to keep them open so as to more closely observe and retain the memories of the band's interaction and performance. I guess I did a little of both.

2. Woody Allen said "time is God's way of making sure everything doesn't happen at once." So tapers, I am completely understanding of your need to get some sleep between shows and enjoy all the fun New York activities, but I think we have all been spoiled by live streams and uploads from Z-Man (THANKS DUDE). Anyway, maybe Z-Man's money ran out, or something like that, and many of us would be grateful for another listen to the shows...so please upload your recordings.

3. The crowd was the crowd. Vibes are extremely localized. I had a great time last night, but during set one, there was this one oriental kid who I see on the floor at almost every Nokia/Best Buy show and HE IS A DICK. He always dances like he's twirling freely in the hallway, no matter how packed the floor is, aggressively rubbing against and throwing elbows into whomever he worms his way next to, as if to say "this music is so great that I just can't control myself." Think "hippie-moshing." I think he has some sort of personality disorder or something.

Anyway, as he shoved himself through the crowd on the floor he almost go stomped by 10 different people. Not that they were ganging up on him all at once. More that he was wrecklessly bouncing from person to person like a pinball and one or two people at a time were being brought to the point of violence. When he finally gave up on doing his thing on the floor he charged past me and stomped on my foot. I said, "watch out." He said, "it's not my fault." I said something like, "of course it's your fault, you just stomped on my foot." "Watch where you're going and take some responsibility for your actions."

Oh yeah. And sometimes he smells really bad too. And that's all I have to say about that.

4. I'm sure you will all agree or at least imagine that New York City is a really exciting place to visit. I grew up in NJ 30 minutes from Manhattan and heading in is always exciting to me. However, whenever I pop out of Holland Tunnel (where my great uncle's name is purportedly on the plaque as one of the tunnel's builders but you can never read it because you can't stop by the plaque), my excitement is always tinged with melancholy. For there sits the building that used to contain Wetlands. Wetlands was a hippie bar which hosted everyone from Blues Traveler and Phish and the Spin Doctors and Zen Tricksters to Sublime from about 1988 to 2001 when they lost their lease. It was a special, special home away from home for music lovers like me and countless others. I mean, how many bars get their own documentaries? I higly recommend that you rent the Wetlands Preserved DVD.

Anyway, the point I'm getting to, and the reason I'm commenting on this here is, there's a funny part of the movie where they ask various band and staff members "how many people did Wetlands hold?" One of the best answers came from one of the booking agents who said, "it depended on who was playing." "If you had some peaceful hippie jam band you could fit more and if you had Government Mule with a lot of big fat guys you could fit a lot less."

So, as for Best Buy releasing more last minute tickets to make some extra bucks (which they don't need to share with the band because how would the band know about it?), that's a standard business practice. One would just hope that they actually eyeballed the crowd and guaged the vibe to be sure they weren't creating an explosive situation. Personally, I never felt the crowding was completely out of hand.

However, and here's the interesting part. There is another factor at work here. I took the train home with a guy who saw the show for free. He said his sister is a struggling dancer in the Times Square area and she made friends with a bunch of the cops. Whenever he wants to see a show he just lets her know and when he gets to the show her cop buddy walks him right past the ticket takers and puts him on the elevator down to the floor. He said one of the other cops told his cop to take him to the other side because he had already taken a dozen people in himself and they try not to be too obvious about it.

I thought that was hysterical, but it's also a mitigating factor in accusations that the venue oversold the place.

We want Phil that dude also likes to cut the line at the bar. He did it right in front of me and I was thinking "dude" and then he chatted up this sister with dreds and was complaining there was no dance space lol.
Which was true but to be smashing into peeps was not cool.

I am surprised so many peeps so far loved the Corrina :-O

If you think about it, this was probably the first time that the AR medley was played by any band of note. Certainly, it was never played by the Beatles, who stopped touring years before releasing that record.

Yes the Asian guy was the worst. Saw him each night insanely sweaty and smelly. He was bumping into me non stop until I put a few elbows up. Every area he went to people were disgusted with him. I saw him last night in the bathroom before the show started stripping down completely naked in the sink area to take his long john's off under his clothes. Just awful.

Wish I would have seen/heard this. Sounds absolutely amazing. Should be on Archive.org soon. As for others who have done this and still do this Medley. You have to give credit to the Beatles cover band The Fab Faux. Although I have never seen them, they do the second side of Abbey Road as flawlessly as I have ever heard (from a note for note perspective). If anyone has heard this I'm sure that they'll agree. No one has mentioned whether or not either Paul or Ringo even know that Furthur did this and if they have commented on it. We'll see. AND lastly does anyone even know why Phil and the boys thought of doing this to begin with?
just curious. Peace RR

Hey GratefulBillinNJ "i feel bad for Philly" - I need to know the powerball numbers. Since you already know that nothing they could possibly do in Philly will top Tues BB, I figured you'd have that info too. Here's the deal. We've all seen tons of KILLER shows in our time, and with any luck a bunch more. Sure I love the anomalies like the Medley, always nice to see something special and different(I wasn't there). And I'm not looking to top those who were there last night, but the next 6 shows have some serious potential and happen to be the ones that work for me. May everyone get what they need!!!

I know it seems hard to beat but one of the reasons I love Furthur is that each show is different. I'm trying to hit every show on the tour...hading out for tonights show in a few minutes. Tonight will be different and unique.

Quick observations: First few tunes went quickly but each had a very quick transition betwen them - showing they were thinking (and perhaps in the "medley" state of mind for the Abbey Road finale). The jam out of Miracle went on for a little bit and teased Crazy Fingers before the Jed. The Corrina was mercifully short and focused and tolerable. Then Crazy Finger -> So Many Roads a nice double dose of John. The Masons was played with a lot of energy and enthusiasm, far better than the Promised Land I was expecting.

2nd set did not start w/the Beatles medley so we were figuring "it's out" - nice versions of Golden Road, Scarlet, China Cat - no transitions until the China Cat - they teased New Potatoe only to play it next, just like in the 1st set. After Ramble I was dreading the Looks Like Rain and having the set flushed down the crapper, but we got the New Potatoe instead, and this had a lot of psychedelic energy, and the jam out of it built up - into the Abbey Road Medley!!!!! As everyone else already said, this was completely over the top, unbelievable, and so focused/ well rehearsed, certainly nothing like anything I'd ever seen a GD-related band perform. Certainly a once in a lifetime experience. Built to Last made a nice statement, then Truckin'. Set over at 11:30, but they'd started each set early with a short setbreak. Helps us train-travelers. Heard hints of Tom Thumb's in the encore warmup but it was to be St Stephen followed by the Abbey Rd conclusion - very nice! A fine and fitting Phil's B-Day tribute. And so much of that medley reminded me of the Other Stuff drama that continually goes down - so many appropriate lyrics!
